Top 3 Travel Destinations to Visit in 2016

With a new year comes a new list of destinations to add to our travel lists. Where did you go in 2015? And where would you like to visit in 2016? Europe? Asia? Or somewhere closer to home in North and South America?

If you’ve been following me on Instagram this past year, then you’ve been part of my recent adventures to Dubai, Riviera Nayarit, Montreal, and even atop a remote glacier in the Rocky Mountains. Since my first trip with the Amex SPG Card, it’s safe to say that I’ve caught the travel bug along the way and I’m looking at 2016 with an even greater sense of wanderlust.

Travelling with the Amex SPG Card has given me the opportunity to travel even more. I’m able to use my Card not only at over 1,200 hotels globally to earn Starpoints, but I can also earn them on my day-to-day expenses at home and abroad.

To kickstart your destination dreaming, American Express & SPG have put together a list of the Top 5 travel destinations in 2016 and from it I’ve picked out my personal Top 3 to share with you!

1. Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia

The largest of 99 islands in the Langkawi archipelago, Pulau Langkawi is a tropical island paradise, known for its pristine white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters and is definitely on my list of places to visit. Pulau Langkawi is home to numerous traditional villages that carry on the history of the island. When visiting check out their many luxurious hotels and resorts to choose from, like the St. Regis Langkawi.

2. Maldives

We’ve all seen the perfect photos on Pinterest of the overwater luxury huts, mile-long white sand beaches and shallow, crystal clear waters. Maldives has been on my travel list forever and I still have yet to visit the remote, dream destination. It is made up of 26 natural atolls; ring-shaped reef or chain of islands formed of coral. One thing I would love to do is take a helicopter ride to see the complexity of the atolls from above. The beauty of the Maldives goes below sea level as well, with a vast and spectacular coral reef and wide range of aquatic life. In Maldives, I would definitely like to stay at a resort that has the iconic overwater suites, such as the W Retreat & Spa. After seeing so many pictures of the unique structures, I feel it is a must try!

3. Kyoto, Japan

Japan is a more recent addition to my travel list. The country is rich in history, combining age-old traditions with advanced modern day technology and lifestyle. If I were to plan a trip to Japan, I would of course like to visit the nation’s capital, Tokyo. However, I would also like to explore Kyoto, the former capital of Japan. Kyoto is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than 1,600 Buddhist temples, and some 400 Shinto shrines. While I’m there I want to check out the Suiran Hotel, with its own Meiji Era Residence – certainly a feast for the eyes and a wealth of history just waiting to be learned!
